Who owns Instagram

In today’s time, there is no doubt that Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms available out there. The platform was launched back in 2010, and it’s been 9 years. However, there is this question that many people have is who owns Instagram?

Well, in case if you have the same question in your mind. Then I am here to help you out. In this article, I will talk about who owns Instagram and the history behind the platform.

So let’s just head into the topic without wasting much of the time:

Instagram In The Beginning

Back in 2010, social media changed forever. There were two entrepreneurs Kevin Systrom, and Mike Krieger created and launched Instagram in October.

Both of the entrepreneurs met at a party in January 2010. And they both were working on separate apps. However, when they talked, they combined the idea of socializing the photo sharing app seemed like a great idea to them.

And together, they created Instagram. At first, the focus for them was to make Instagram an instant telegram. Hence the name is Instagram. Next, the thing they created was filters. Primarily the filters were to create Holga lens inspired looks. So the pictures would look vintage and artsy.

Launching Instagram

Mike and Kevin, who own Instagram, had internet troubles when they were launching the app. The night the app was launched on October 6, 2010. The app had so much traffic that the server crashed. And about 25,000 people signed up to Instagram in the first 24 hours.

Hence, as a new app, it was pretty hit, and it was easy to use and gave the photos a unique presence online. And within 9 months of the app launch, it had around 7 million users. And it became a trend among celebrities.

And people started to realize Instagram was more than a photo sharing and photo editing app. But a social media site and it was a place to discover new people.

Facebook Buys Instagram

After a successful 18 months of running, Facebook brought Instagram back in April 2012. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates in February 2010. And it was celebrating nearly 1 billion users in early 2012.

And Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock. And it was a good idea for Facebook to have a more secure social media app in the market. And there are millions of people who started to leave Facebook each year. Hence, it was a good idea for them to have a better platform where users can come and join. And it was Instagram and Snapchat.Facebook who owns Instagram, promised to develop the app as a separate entity from Mark Zuckerberg’s own social media site.

Kevin And Mike Stay With Instagram

After Facebook bought Instagram, Kevin and Mike kept working hard. And they had 16 person team, and the two co founders continued to work independently within the larger scope of the app.

Also, there were a few major changes when facebook brought Instagram. But overall, as a platform, Instagram didn’t change much.

These changes include:

1.      More monthly users: Facebook, who owns Instagram, allowed the company to grow despite being a rival to its own site.

2.      Instagram introduced new filters.

3.      Instagram linked to Twitter and Facebook. So you can tweet or post a photo straight from the Instagram app only.

4.      Users can tag their friends to their posts just like Facebook.

5.      Users can view Instagram on their web browser. However, the user will not be able to post on the site.

6.      Kevin and Mike’s idea was always to keep the app simple and fun.

Who Owns Instagram Matters

Facebook did not follow what exactly Kevin and Mike wanted to do with Instagram. Instead, Facebook changed Instagram quite a lot.

Now the platform has joined by quite a lot of influencers and brands. And Instagram is allowing individuals and brands to connect with each other via a paid partnership.

It does no matter if you have 1000 of followers or you are a celebrity with millions of followers. Brands are reaching out to Instagram users to promote their brands and products. And a small photo sharing app became a marketplace for all the brands out there.

Also, yes Instagram has done a lot to encourage others to participate in their hand at photography. And with the increased use of Smartphones, the founders made users feel enough confident that their photos are good.

But Facebook happens to have a completely different idea when it comes to making the app work as a social media app.

Kevin And Mike Leave Instagram

The co founders of Instagram announced their departure from the company in September 2018. And it was really a shocking news for people around the globe. But it was also a light on the negative impact of Facebook on the app.

For facebook, it was not so much big news that casual users should know. But for Kevin and Mike, the app has changed a lot, and it wasn’t the way they used to run the app.

It was revealed that both of them left the company over an ongoing frustration and tension due to the way Facebook changed the app. Kevin and Mike haven’t always agreed with Mark Zuckerberg on new ideas.

Also, they did not like the idea of sharing posts between the two networks. Since Facebook promised that they would run the app as a separate entity. But instead, two of the networks started to merge with each other every passing year.

Even recently, Facebook allowed your Instagram story to be shared on Facebook stories. However, it was not bad news for everyone. According to Kevin and Mike, they are working on something else.

Also, talking about Facebook, the social media network started to lose its creditability. And the network is being the center of most of the controversies like data theft and so on. But on the other hand, Instagram seems to be a success for them.
